Adopted name of Emil Hansen (1867-1956) German Expressionist painter and graphic artist. Nolde studied in Paris and Dachau, joined the group of artists known as die Brücke 1906–07, and visited Polynesia 1913; he then became almost a recluse in NE Germany. Many of his themes were religious.
